This is for a 6, but it is extremely close:

Removing the flywheel:

removing the plate:

removing the powerhead:

and, the all important crankcase seal:

Get a new water pump too
and change the gear oil.

Oh, and when you reinstall the power head, DO NOT use RTV sealant. Buy a gasket.
RTV will block the water-passages

now if im putting a new (old) powerhead on i dont need to screw around with that do i? just as an fyi to everyone who might think im retarded im 19 so give me a break here

So you are 19 eh? That's good. You aren't too old to learn. I was a full time mechanic in an outboard dealership by the time I was 19. Listen and learn. I'm still learning and I'm 73.

What I told you about the screws, you can take to the bank. Also, what I told you about the seal, you better pay attention. Why would you want to replace the powerhead without fixing what caused the old one to fail?

F R im not trying to remove the coils, i need to get the wheel? that they are on off and the screws i can see holding it down are underneath that wheel? and i cant get to them. what im doing now is taking my broken powerhead out and putting the newer one in and transfering everything over to the new i got the fly wheel off the carb off and cleanned and so on.. the only thing i cant get is the stupid wheel that holds the coils on in that the screws are underneath it theres got to be something im missing.

Wheel as in flywheel? You need a 3 jaw puller , grade 8 bolts long enough to thread into the flywheel and then something to screw the puller clockwise to pull. I use an air gun, makes easy work of it otherwise a strap wrench and breaker bar would do it.

I know what you mean, but "3 jaw puller" could be misleading. "Harmonic balancer puller" would be less likely to be mistaken for the wrong kind of puller.

Yup it is, just woke up so thanks for pointing that out. 3 "jaw" would ruin it, you want the puller used to pull harmonic balancers.

Look at the pic F_R posted, the carbon seal is in the middle and yes replace what he suggested, top gasket, o-ring, spring if it's broken, carbon seal if it's worn.

Then un-do the screws that hold it down. Phillips head, two go through the coils and two are between the coils and breaker points. You don't have to take them all the way out, they will release after unscrewing them several turns.

EDIT: Those things throw rods because somebody takes them apart and they don't pay attention to the carbon seal that is at the top end of the drive shaft. That seal assembly must be 100% good, and assembled correctly. If not, water gets into the crankcase and you are now seeing the result. Be sure to use a new 303347 o-ring and 303355 gasket.
i can see this stuff on my broken one .. 1. how do i get it off... i want to learn to take it off so i know how it goes on.. 2 are those the part numbers for new ones, if i printed that attachment off an brought it into a place would those be the numbers?

.....ok

If you can see it you can get it. I posted links showing the carbon seal.

Take the power head off. You see this:

Remove the cork seal, and you see the Plate:

here is the cork seal and O-ring

New O-ring. Part number is on the envelope.

Let me know if you need the part number.
