Does any one know how to drop the lower unit on a 1960 5.5hp evinrude fisherman? The book i have to work with doesn't quite come up to the year of motor that I have. It doesn't tell how to unhook the shift linkage to finish dropping the lower unit. Any ideas? thanks!

You've got to remove the powerhead. The shift shaft linkage is right below it. Then you should remove the lower crank seal, spring and washers from the driveshaft (note the order). Then, as you lower the lower unit, you must turn the driveshaft so the pin that holds the lower crank seal in place can fit through a slot partway down the exhaust housing.
Installation is the reverse of removal. :D
You'll need a new powerhead base gasket.

Hope this helps!

All the older motors i have messed with have a plate on the lower leg on the starboard side to get to the shift linkage. Held on with 2 screws. Hope this helps.

The 7.5hp and the 5.5hp and mid-60s- 9.5hp, 6hp don't. Not including the 5hp and 3 & 4hp which had no shift rod.
