This motor is the bane of my existence. I have replace impeller, plugs, wires, coils, points, rebuilt fuel filters, rebuild carb, and tuned this thing to pur like a kitten.

I started it in a barrel and tuned it up. The thing sounds great plenty of water is pumping through engine. So i'm pretty sure the engine over heating isn't a problem. The problem I do get is that the engine when going in the water at full speed completely shuts off after about 2-5 minutes and then almost locks up for a second. It wont let me turn it over for a second then frees up and I can start it again. The other problem is sometimes the gear case gets stuck in reverse. I have to cycle the shifter through forward revers a couple time before starting is to make sure it gets out a reverse and into neutral or forward. I have taken the lower case apart before and didn't see anything wrong. I used the parts breakdown to put it back together. But I must have missed something. I mixed the gas 50:1 i didn't know it was supposed to be 25:1. I am going to fix that. Any Ideas?

You have plenty of water pumping but is it circulating properly, can you hold your hand on the cylinder head for a count of 5 when it stops? Usually with a shut down like that it is usually a overheat or electrical problem, coil overheating and shutting down. You have two coils, don't think both would shut down at the same time. Check the spark as soon as it happens and see if you have good spark.
When it gets stuck in reverse, will the shifter go to neutral and the lower unit stays in reverse?

Shift rods firmly in the coupler with bolts passing through the detents on the ends of the shift rods?

You can put your hand on the head. I had a guy who did the high speed tuning when i was driving and he checked to see if he could put his hand on it when we slowed down. I will have to double check my shift rod. I remember not being able to put the bolts in because i was a little off and had to move them to get the bolts in. I don't think it is a spark issue because if you wait about 3 seconds after its shuts off you can start it and it idles fine again. Could it be from the oil mixture being 50:1 and the bearing got hot and froze up for a second? I hope not. The engine dieing through the guy with me for a loop because he has worked on a lot of evinrudes and never had this problem. I put my boat for sale so my if i don't get the 15 fiberform running good before its sells im calling it quits. I think I may looks for a inboard outboard with a chevy engine. something i have tons of parts for and know how to work on.

Probably not the bearings, if they go it will thump a lot from needle bearings missing or seize from the bearings going. try looking at the vacuum cutoff switch it could shut you down really quick. or your gears in your lower unit are binding from a bearing issue or bad shift dog.
