I discovered through my research that this is was the first year these outboards had thermostats. I pulled off the thermostat cap, knowing that it would need to be replaced and discovered that there was no thermostat. My question is, do I need to put one in or is it ok to run without it?

You most definately need to put one in. Some owners foolishly remove them trying to solve cooling issues.

+1. If it came with a t-stat keep it. You should be able to get a t-stat kit w/ grommet right here at iboats for about $15.

Thanks. I had already found the replacement part on iboats. I just wanted to make sure there was a reason why it shouldn't be there.
