1959 evinrude sportwin leak

i have a 1959 evinrude with a small problem. first i had a leak to where it looked as if it was coming from behind the prop so i changed the o ring and the prop shaft seal. then after filling the LU with fresh oil it begain leaking oil or something from the drain hole near the exhaust. that then stopped once i tilted the motor up. after doing that the oil is leaking out of the bolts that hold on the LU so i dont know if that is just the gasket or if it is somewhere in the upper half of the the motor. any help is appreciated. will have pictures attached below.

Did you have this laying on its side when it was leaking there?

Hi sevenhillsbilly. I just had the same problem. Your drive shaft seal is bad and LU oil escaping out of the top of the gear case, beneath the impeller plate and housing. Not to worry, it's a pretty easy job and you can order a complete reseal kit from right here at iboats for about $20. Here's a link that can walk you through the whole job. Holler if you get stuck.

That is what I was thinking kfa if it was on its side, OR could be the shift rod seal as well. Either or, possibly both.

the motor was tilted up while on the back of the boat.

and does the re seal kit include all neccisary seals for both of the problems described?

Yes it would. Unfortunate that you may need to open up the gearcase again if it is in fact the shift rod seal.

That is why I always just reseal a gearcase entirely when one is leaking.

yeah, you may as well do the whole kit an kaboodle. It's not that bad, really. You should be able to pull the old seal(s) and o-rings out, clean out their housings, then tap in the new ones with some gasket sealant such as 3M 847, then you just put it all back together. Keep in mind, that your motor is over 50 years old, so it may never be perfectly water/air tight again, but it should get much, much better with new seals. I just keep an eye on my gear oil and change/top it off as needed.
