Re: 1959 Evinrude Lark

Thank you all for contributing this thread, I really appreciate the help. Does anyone know the torque lbs for the head bolts to re-assemble? It doesn't seem like any sealant was used on the head and there are no visible gaps or leaks. Also, is there a pattern to tighten the bolts? I know on car engine blocks you start at X lbs in Y pattern, then increase to X lbs in same Y pattern, same here???

Get a new gasket. Torque to 220-240 INCH/LBS. No sealer required.

Start with half the torque value for a round, then 3/4, then the full torque value. This ensures even torque. Be sure to dress the head first as well. I dont think I have ever found one perfect. Directions to follow in the pics.

Re: 1959 Evinrude Lark

You have the parts from a few different years on there, but in general a 1959 35hp Lark parts manual would be good to go by.

Im not convinced that it is the head gasket. Could likely use to have the head dressed, and new gasket installed, but I dont think that is your initial problem. I belive the rings are stuck on the bad cylinder. Remove the bypass cover on the side of the motor for the bad cylinder, align the rings with the hole by turning the flywheel, then push on the rings with a small screwdriver. Do they bounce? Or are they stuck?

I just dont think you will be able to run it with compression like that to be able to do a decarb at all. Best to know what you are dealing with before investing any more money.

It didn't rain and I quit early today. I took the side port off and pressed on the rings, there were three. It seemed like the middle ring pressed in easier than the other two. They both kinda popped when I pushed them in. I was thinking at this point I should check the impeller and then a gasket and re-test the compression, would you agree?

I got the gasket ordered and a new impeller as well. The instructions posted by High Trim are great, thanks!

Was this on the bad, upper cylinder?

If the rings bounced as you describe, and you did not notice any damage to the piston or cylinder walls, I would dress the head and install a new gasket as described above.

Be sure to let us know howit goes!

That's what I was thinking! I got the parts today, iboats was crazy fast on this one, I'm going to resurface the head this weekend, and test compression again. I can't wait to see what happens, my gut says the compression will be fine, fingers crossed. I did the seafoam soak thing as well. Pics to follow.

The instructions say 0 or 00 grit to resurface, my quick google search shows that as being 80 or 100 grit. Thats seems rough to me for an aluminum head, any advice? Thanks!

Watch as you dress the head where it wears first and last. Would be interesting to know. Use glass pane, or something perfectly flat to dress it on.

I have lots of big glass, what grit? Is contact cement best? Do you add any water? Never done this, but have watched some youtube videos, which usually works out but you don't always get the info you need. It is amazing what you can learn if you can just see someone do it. But I love this site as you can then ask questions, I don't know what I'd do without it. Thanks for the help guys, very much appreciated.

Success!!! I got the head sanded today, it cleaned up from the outside in, the area where the two clylinders meet was the last to clean up. After it was back together I tested and got 100 psi on top, and 95-98 on bottom. I'm super excited that it may run. I'll try to do the impeller next weekend and bucket test it. Thanks everyone for your help!
