Please help! tuned motor. rebuilt carb, coils, points, plug wires. problem is i went through 6 gallons of gas in 9 miles running very rich no matter how lean i cut it. i checked the vaccum hose @ fuel pump and it has very slight fuel in hose, but in my mind not enough to go through that much fuel. when i stop leaves large ring in water, and plugs wet. compression @ 90 psi. im out of ideas other than rebuilding the fuel pump. also wont get up on plane@ high speed most likely related. Any help would be apprieciated. Thanks!

How did you set your carbs? Sure it's spotlessly clean? Check the Top Secret File at the top of this forum.

I would recommend you rebuild the fuel pump to insure you are not sucking fuel directly into the crankcase. Also, with my 1959 Johnson 35, I had to clean the carb three times before I got ALL the crud out out of it. If you did not soak it overnight in carb cleaner, there's a real good chance it still has some deposits in the jets. Do you need a service manual?

3/4 turn on the high speed is too much. But you seem to indicate you tried different settings(??). Run it at full throttle and lean it out till it starts to falter, then back toward rich till it regains power.

Fuel pump: Remove the pulse hose and squeeze the primer bulb. If gas comes out the hose fittting, the diaphragm is holed. That will make it guzzle gas big time.
