I picked up this motor at an auction for $50. It fired once when I got everything set up. So I changed the coils (very bad and fell apart when the came out). Then regapped the points, and did a carb rebuild. Now it starts and runs well (I will need to get some input on adjusting the low speed needle) but didn't pump water. I changed the impeller which was also in bad shape and it pumped very well at first. coincidently I resealed the lower unit and put it back together, now I am getting just a trickle from the pee holes and nothing out of the exhaust snout. What happened? And if a chunk of the old impeller traveled into the cooling system, how do I get it out?

possibly you missed the water pump grommet < or folded it over > with the water tube when you did the reseal work and reattached the lower unit

Few things could have happened.

Was the old impeller broken? If so, a chunk may be lodged in the cooling circuit as you think. Drop the lower unit, and flush/backflush with the garden hose or compressed air to see if it is blocked. Hopefully if it is the compressed air will blast it out.

Other possibility is the impeller housing grommet is pinched as mentioned, possibly happened when you put the gearcase back up. Pretty common.

To adjust the low speed needle, start it at 1.5 turns out from gently seated. Idle the motor in gear on the water, and in small increments, turn the needle in, clockwise, until it start to mildly backfire or wants to die. Then back it out, ccw, 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn will be the ideal setting.

Re: 1959 Evinrude 10hp

Thanks for the information,

The first time I reattached the lower unit the gromit had folded over, but I was not able to get the bolts to thread. This made that time little easier to identify. I have a feeling that a small piece of the old impeller is in there somewhere. I have not gotten out to the garage again but some questions for when I do:

The Evinrude mechanic that has supplied most of the parts I have purchased has mentioned that the compressor method of clearing the line may not be good for the motor, why? He had suggested attaching a hose to the location where the previously mentioned gromit is and blowing to identify if there is an obstruction (he never mentioned how to get it out if there was). My assumption was to take the air hose and block off the pee holes and try to get a good seal at the snout, or should I try the other direction (i figure send it back to where it came from)?

Thanks again for the help.

Ask him why he doesnt reccomend compressed air, I cannot think of why. Im not saying blast 100psi through it, lol.

I usually put my compressed air line onto the water line and blast debris out the exhaust.

When installing the lu, put a little grease/vaseline on the end of the water line, to help it slide into the grommet. Trying to do it dry can cause issues.
