I have read here on the forum that some claim that the waterpump does not work if the thermostat is removed on a 1959 big twin. Why should it not work? My thermostat does not open properly and that caused my engine to seize, now after changed rings etc. have i removed the thermostat and the flow from the "hole" is better than ever. Anyone know if it is ok to use the engine without the termostat? Atleast until i get a new one.

Because it's a recycleing thermostat system it cycles warm engine water back to the water pump intill the thermostat opens and dumps it overboard.

Fredrik, first let me say that it is extremely unusual for the thermostat to fail in the closed position. They almost always fail in the open position. But if you are convinced that is what damaged your motor, nobody will convince you otherwise.

Nevertheless, the problem with removing it, other than running too cool, is that people remove not only the thermostat, but they also throw away the black housing and check valve. Without those parts, exhaust can travel down the water return tube, back to the water pump, and prevent the pump from working properly. That is what you have been reading about.

Water is pretty cold there in Sweden, isn't it? The thermostat constantly samples the water temperature after it passes through the powerhead and opens or closes as required to maintain proper engine temperature. When it is closed, the water is sent back to the pump for recirculation. This is going on any time the motor is running. In cold water, the thermostat may not open at all at slow idle speeds. Even at higher speeds, it will be opening and or closing.....which may make you think it is not working correctly. With it removed, it is as if wide open all the time, so sure it discharges lots of water.

Ok, i have not removed the check valve and housing so in principle it is ok to run with? I will change the thermostat just in case of :)

Watertemp is about 20C in summertime when i will use the boat.

I agree with Frank. If what you think happened to your motor happened, it would be rare.

Put that t stat back in. It may SEEM like you are getting better flow, but you are just viewing it as it would be when the stat is open. You may not have noticed the greater flow before.

I have seen it stop pumping before on these dual line thermostatically controlled motors when exhaust gas gets down to the pump. They make great water pumps, but not so good air pumps!

Listen to Frank, I do, as do all the others on the forum.

Hi K650. Good call on the t-stat. If your motor was designed with one, it should be used. Thankfully, they are fairly inexpensive and simply drop right into place.
