Just the top splines, NOT the top of the drive shaft itself. Grease on top will prevent proper fit.

The Gasket Sealing Compound is for the threads of the impeller housing bolts. The 3M 847 is used to seal down the impeller plate, to the casting. Not completely necessary, but just something I do to prevent air intrusion. Again, the sealer is not necessary around the outer edge of the seals, but just something extra if you have it.

Re: 1959 35hp Evinrude Lark - ignition wiring question

So I struggled with oil seal mounted in the lower unit for about 1/2hr, as you can see, torn up. I stuffed some papertowels down the tube to prevent metal parts dropping in there. The seal was brass, It was rock solid. I searched and found numerous solutions to get it out, none worked. I finally went to the auto parts store down the road and bought this $11 Puller. It took it out in 3 seconds, no joke. I then used it to pull wheel bearings off three hand carts, so simple, I can't believe I just now own this tool.

Can you see the difference in thickness? The old one was twice as thick. is that right?, or did someone replace the wrong part?

Ah we should have given you a heads up on the puller long ago!

The thickness is fine. The OD and ID and important. The new seals are not made to the exact width anymore. Totally fine. Use an appropriate sized socket against the seal then hit the socket with a hammer with light even taps until flush and you are done.

So I’m having some ignition issues as well that I hope you guys can help with. This wire that is connected to the end of the bus bar goes to my ignition. When I turn the key i get 12v to that wire and it gets hot and starts smoking (because the bus bar is grounded” when disconnected nothing happens when I turn the key. Is it even supposed to be connected? This boat and motor is new to me so I’m trying to get this thing going after sitting for possibly 20 years. So far, 120PSI compression, no spark, new plugs, wiring other than in the box looks good, new starter solenoid, and 0 information from previous owner.

Your trouble lies elsewhere. That wire is never supposed to go to12V

do you know where that wire should go by any chance? I believe I figured out why it was getting 12v but, where should it be going to?
