i do belive that this motor is a 1958. I do seem to have a problem though, i cant get it to wind up in wot it wants to "bobble" in the top end, that being said i am a certified yamaha atv mechanic so i know my way around an engine but i have limited experince with outboards... i dont know whats happening. Ive cleaned the carb and set the points to .020 like the flywheel said the lower unit has clean oil and doesnt leak the pressure tank is holding well the plugs are good and the compression is around 90psi on both cyliders. Im pretty sure its operator failure seeing as i really dont know how to set the fuel and air screws on the front of the motor...any help would be very much appriciated

p.s. here is a video i found, this is the same motor as mine color and all

There is a thread on carb adjustment in the "Top-secret " file at the top of this forum

Re: 1958 evinrude sportwin 10

Try setting the high speed needle (lower knob) to 3/4 turn out, and the low speed to 1.5 turns out. That's a good starting point. Then adjust the high speed needle to optimum by adjusting while running WOT. Then you can fine tune the low speed needle while trolling it down. If it still bogs down, and you are sure the carb is squeaky clean, then make sure tank is developing pressure. Try pumping the primer button when it bogs and see if that solves the problem. If it does, then you have an air leak somewhere. I'd suspect there is still some junk in the carb restricting fuel flow.

i really appriciate your help everyone, but i think i messed up in my original post, in addition to the "bobble" on the top it also will hardly run at idle. it seems to only run in midrange. i already checked the pressure tank and its good. i went through the carb pretty well, the plugs are good, points are set to .020 and i didnt see any visible dmg to the coils or stator it seems to get good spark im kinda stuck, i really want to get this beauty running good so i can get it on the water. the one time i did get it out it wouldnt go over maybe 5mph and wouldnt wind up like it should......thank you everyone for being so receptive...ill try tearing the carb down and putting it in a carb dip

Please tell us what a "bobble" is. We have a language barrier here.

Measure the spark with a spark tester. Inconsistent spark makes 'em do funny things.
good luck,

Here are a couple links for your reading and hopefully help you maintain your motors.

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/johnson_QD.htm (great reading)

Check out this information that was posted on this forum...but in another thread. It is in the public domain and under a library resource. Look for the condensed manual for your motor and that might help you out some until you are able to order a manual.

Iboats does sell manuals, please check it out.

It is a Free service and open to public and LOADED with helpful Information, Manuals, Service data etc..!

Go to: http://search.ebscohost.com/

Log in with:

Name: marshall

P.W. : public

-----Go under the Small Engine Repair Reference Center

-----Then select Marine/Boat motors

----- EVINRUDE/JOHNSON

-----OUTBOARD 10 HP (1955-1963)

Scroll through the list of makers/manufacturers

Search by type, brand, etc. They are all in PDF format so you can save them for future refference....

A GREAT FIND !!

Hope this helps ya!

as far as the "bobble" goes it's like it hit a rev limiter if you will kinda hard to explain but it wont rev up more than what seems to be half way and it wont really idle, i'm not versed in the outboard motors but i do have extensive experince with atv and other land engines im gonna spend all weekend on it.
i appriciate it F_R

and i definately will check out iboats manuals i didnt know that they sell them here, do they sell parts as well?

Cool! That's my video! My Sportwin is definitely a keeper!

As noted previously, check to make sure you're firing on both cylinders. Might also try removing one plug wire at a time, grounding it to the block, starting the motor and noting any difference in how it runs. Might find it runs on one and not the other...

Ah yes, the old bobble. A very common complaint. Running at half speed is almost always due to running on one cylinder. Check your compression and spark. And make sure water isn't getting in the missing cylinder.

Yes, in Texas you need a title for your motor. :( I live in Texas and sometimes in the past 2 or a bit more decades, motor registration became a requirement. So, you motor may not have been titled by the previous owner. The only way to find out is to request a search by the TPWD to see if the motor is titled. If it has been shown that it is not titled in Texas, then with a bill of sales and proper forms and money you can title your motor. Here are a couple of link to help you out. If has been titled, but the person who sold you the motor is not the titled owner, well it gets complicated.:(

Re: 1958 evinrude sportwin 10

It's worth as much as the guy's willing to pay for it. Personally, if I knew it had good spark, good compression, and the motor is complete and shifts well, I would pay up to $150 because I know I can get it running and it'd be worth 2-3 times that.

But having said that, it'd be a shame to get rid of such a nice motor. I have a '56 evinrude 10hp. Needs new seals, but other than that, it runs like a champ.
