not if you just idle it... bucket tuning won't allow you to adjust things perfectly... just get it running then use a lake to finish up on adjustmenets
I'll just leave the prop on and adjust the carb once the weather gets warmer on the lake/river. I was hoping to get it close before running it in the lake but I'll just wait until it's on the boat.

I ran in to a problem - the spring on the movable sectopn of the points is about 1/8" longer than the originals and will interfere with putting the clip on. I'm thinking I need to mark the spring length and trim off the excess or is there something else that should be done? I am able to push the spring back so it's flush with the side of the point base but I am worried the clip won't stay on if I do that.
I have the correct kit - it states 56-58 7-1/2 HP on the package.

use the old one
I am talking about the movable portion of the points. I don't want to use the old half of the points because they're pitted. Attached is a picture showing the problem.

Part no. 172522 genuine Envinrude/Johnson kit. When I called the dealer for the secondary ignition wire, he asked me if I had the points and I told him I did and he said to bring them in as there has been some issues where some batches of points needed to be modified so they could be adjusted.

When I showed him the package, he told me those were fine and did not need to be modified. He could tell by looking at the package. On the back of the package, it lists the application and the 7-1/2 from 1956-1958 was listed so I believe I have the correct parts.

I'm thinking the easiest thing to do is to mark the excess and then remove the approximately 1/8" from the tail of the spring and re-install.

I looked into that but it looks like it would interfere with the points when they open up. I am going to call my dealer and see what he has to say about it.

What happens when you push the clip in place???---With the spring as it is without any cutting.-----With the little bump going in that hole.-----I have seen a few with the clip installed wrong over the years.----Always said that a novice forgot how it came apart.

I talked to the dealer and he told me to do exactly that - he said to just install the clip and it will be fine so that's what I am going to do. I am hoping to run the motor in the barrel this weekend to test it out.
