How much is too much...

If the plate on the boat says max 30 horse... can I do a 35?

I want the boat to be fast... but not unsafe...

Re: 1958 Arkansas Travler 14 Foot...

I just purchased an Arkansas Traveler that looks very much like yours. I took the fiberglass bow cover off. I'm going to upgrade the steering to helm and mount a side console. Anyone looking for parts, i have some available.

HI jc. Glad to see you're making progress. Your motor probably doesn't have a kill switch. The old motors were designed to be killed by simply turning the throttle all the way down, which stalls the motor. TO prevent it from doing so, simply advance the idle set screw a few turns to prevent the twist grip from bottoming out so far. Thankfully, you can/should add a push button lanyard kill switch in about 5 min for $10, or so. It's a must have safety item, and only involves running a single wire to each set of points from the back of the switch. You can get them here at iboats, or at sites like amazon. I've put them on all my vintage motors and wouldn't go on the water without one.

Re: 1958 Arkansas Travler 14 Foot...

KFA - Thanks for the idea... however it looks like yours is setup as a tiller motor, where I
am going to use my stock steering wheel and controls.

There is a start stop button next to the steering wheel, and a choke next to that along
with another "switch" I can't really tell what for...

On the motor there is two wires coming out with eye hooks.

I understand that I need a starter solonoid... spelling... and a battery and should be good to go?

Re: 1958 Arkansas Travler 14 Foot...

Hoping I could get some help here on this one...

If someone can look at the photo of the engine without the cover, I think they might be able to help...
I know my Johnson 35 has a starter on it... however I am not sure if it needs the starter solonoid that
was in the box mounted to the transom... it is not the original motor to the boat, but it is the same year.

There are two wires shown in the photo... while I am guessing went to the solonoid... I guess what I am asking for is
how to make what I have operational... I can not read a wiring diamgram and understand it...

what I currently have is a push button start and choke... I dont care if the remote choke does not work... the wires that come from that... and the motor... thats it...

Winter is over and the cover is off... Getting the battery placed, and trying to get the electric start to work...

I need a windshield... I am thinking of doing a very small motor cycle windshield... or somethings 50's rat rodish...

So I got the 1958 Johnson Super Seahorse started today pull start, ran and shifted in a bucket yay!

At the pawn shop they had a Penn Yan 4 seater wooden boat left hand drive? I wonder if it is worth getting?

She looks beautiful jcoppah! I recognize the tell-tale AT floor drainage grooves/hull strakes. Do you have any full body shots? When are you hitting the water?
