Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted, but recently I bought myself a new motor now and I'm picking up a 12 foot aluminum boat this weekend, Here's the motor I got do you guys think this was a good deal, it looks nice and seems to run well tell me what you think. Also, what do you guys think is the best oil to run in this engine, and I also heard that they run better on leaded gasoline is that true or does it not really matter? Any responses are greatly appreciated

Tetraethyl led was used as an octane improver because it has four (tetra) alcohol (ethyl as in booze alcohol) molecules attached to a lead atom. So if there was a choice between poor quality unleaded and "Ethyl" or "High Test" gasoline, yeah, the would run a bit better--- but they don't require anything more than regular grade. Today, gasoline is high enough in quality that regular 87 octane is more than sufficient, and since it contains way less sulphur that years ago, the engine will last longer because very little sulphuric acid is formed. Years ago, auto mufflers and tailpipes only lasted about 10,000 miles because of the acid.

Problem is that when tetraethyl is burned, free lead is discharged, polluting the environment. Lead is a poisonous heavy metal and tetraethyl lead has been banned from use for many years now.

They (outboards) run better on UNLEADED gas. Leaded gas plugs the exhaust ports upon continued running.

You may have paid a little bit more than I would have-- I have a 35 and will probably only get around 250 for it--, but those smaller engines are in demand and sell for a premium on ebay. On the positive side, it will probably run forever, it looks in excellent condition for its age, and it has all cast aluminum shrouds. You won't find anything as well made today. So if you bought it for the long run, what's a couple of dollars either way?

Can I just use the Wal-Mart TCW-3 oil or should I use something different.

Looks clean, nice runner. Enjoy!

edit: If you bought from a private party, you could have saved a few bucks, but you would likely have to fix something. This seller makes a living reconditioning old motors, and went through it and lake tested it for you. You can check out some of his work here. That said, I think you did ok.

Yeah, I talked to the fella, he seemed like a really nice guy and was cooperative, anyway it seems as though he really knows his way around these old outboards. By the way I was wondering if anybody would know what kind of performance I should expect from this engine. I'm going to be putting it on a 12ft light duty aluminum boat, I weigh about 135lbs plus I'd probably bring 30 or 40lbs of gear.

I ran my '58 Evinrude Bigtwins on Pennzoil semi-synthetic at 50:1, but the motors have needle bearings, which I don't think your 7.5 hp Johnson has. That being the case, I think your oil mixture should be 24:1, even running a high quality semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil.

I think I would inspect the transom very carefully. The sandwiched wooden transom doesn't impress me much. My guess is that he original transom has serious problems.

I see he added a new photo. Looks like he re-enforced the transom with angle iron.

I will when I go look at it, what kind of problems should I look for?

-Dan

Unless you get the guy to pull the wood on either side of the transom, you'll probably not be able to see much. Look at the outer edges of the transom, where it meets the sides. If you see any significant corrosion, thin aluminum, etc., you have problems. Even if that is OK, the center portions are still a huge question mark.

The "reinforcement" of this boat was very poorly done IMO. To be frank, I wouldn't touch it, unless the seller is willing to strip the wood off and allow a full inspection. Then and only then, I might buy it for a very low price and properly rebuild the transom.

Thats a beautiful little outboard! I don't think thats a bad price for a small boat and trailer. It looks like they both need a little work, but you're buying used and should expect that. I think the price is fair. Just my 02

Well, I picked up a boat today, but the not the one I posted earlier. Instead I just got a 12ft Jon boat with out a funky transom. The motor should be come this week probably wednesday, I post pictures of the set up once I get it. Also, does anybody have any ideas on what I should use to paint an aluminum boat or what I should use to remove paint?

Just paint over the old stuff and have fun. Pretty much any exterior paint will work, even rustoleum, don't spend a fortune.
