Hello,

I'm new to this. I have read a lot of the useful comments from others so I'm hoping to cash in on the collective wisdom here. I'm not sure of the year of my motor. I have been bad with it I will confess. I have owned and used the motor for about a year and a half. I found the motor and boat in the middle of a cornfield in Wisconsin.

The motor has been solid, strong, noisy, and dependable until about a month ago. It will still start and idle but when I increase the throttle after a few seconds it loudly over-revs and then dies. I'm not sure what is wrong. I know it needs an updating and tune-up on every count but I'm worried I've damaged something I won't be able to repair.

Any guidance on the subject or some direction to repair manuals would be much appreciated.

Well the rev sounds like a spun hub in the prop.If its in gear.
Take the prop off and draw a water proof line across the hub.
Then go for a run and check the line.If its broken you have a spun hub.
If its reving in neutral I would suspect a throttle linkage.
Sometimes an outboard will rev briefly just before it runs out of gas.
Describe noisy. Is there a silencer on the carb?

1959 Sovereign was noisy when it came out of the box. The 3 piece aluminum hood and those pretty doors saw to that. Yes it has (should have) a silencer, but the hood will drive you nutso.

The link below will get you to a free online public library that has service info for many different motors including yours. This is not a "factory" manual but it should be helpful and get you started.

LOGIN as directed then drill down to: Small Engines, Marine/Boat Motors, Gale, 35HP (1956-1964) and Condensed Service Data. Good luck with that great old motor!

Thank you Gentlemen! I have been quite busy with night classes and literally allowed my discouragement with the motor overwhelm me to the point of forgetting to check for your excellent replies!

I am nearly 100% certain the spun hub is part of the major problem. An over-all tune-up is also very needed. However, I have no time nor skill to tear into the motor right now. Worse, although I'm in quite the sea-fairing area I have yet to find a mechanic willing to give my old beauty a once-over.

If anyone has suggestions for the Seattle area I would love to hear them!

Well, it's a good thing you came here. We'll make an expert out of you and you won't need your mechanic. :D

Giving that gem a tune up is pretty easy for you to handle, just feel free to ask us questions.

I just checked the Antique Outboard Club's membership directory for Washington state. There are 121 members there. Several in Seattle. Consider joining the club.
