My shift rod on my 58 Johnson/Evinrude seperated last night while in forward. It threw itself into reverse and has been stuck in that position since. I pulled the lower unit and a piece fell from what I think is the shift knob assembly, and my question is how does the shift rod and shift knob connect? I don't have a manual, and I was wondering if there is a way to get at the shift knob/rod assembly without having to take apart the entire engine so I can fix my little problem.

If it is the junction between the shift handle and the shift rod, you have to remove the powerhead to access it. Actually not a huge deal to get to. Unhook the hoses, remove the vertical throttle arm on the side, unhook the stop switch buttons, and remove the screws and nuts holding the powerhead in place and off it comes! Okay, so the nuts on the side can be difficult to access, but I found that a cheapie 1/2-inch wrench bent to allow better access works wonders!

I replaced one of those parts last year on a similar motor and my local dealer still had the piece on the shelf!
