I got may hands on a 1957 Johnson 3hp that has been in storage for 30 years. It has only about 40 hours on it. What should I replace right away to make this reliable again? Floats? lower end seals? coils? Thanks..

HOLY HOWLIN HORSE TATERS,BATMAN!!! That's just too cool! I'd love to get my hands on that honey!
All the rubber is probably shot,no big whoop.
The jugs are probably gummed,no big whoop.
The carb is ,well a rebuild kit, and it'll probably be good as new
First thing I would do ifn it were mine, is CELEBRATE over a tall one.
Then I would buy the shop manual for it.
Then I'd remove the plugs, and fill the jugs with "Marvel Mystery Oil", and put the plugs back in for now.
Remove the carb, spray some decarb cleaner into the intake till the reeds are drippin.
Rebuild the carb.
Remove the fuel pump, and replace the diaphram and filter (i think you can clean that,as it is a metal screen). But replace the rubber.
Drop the lower unit, and replace the impeller.Inspect the pump housing, shaft, and discharge tube for corosion or mud dawber nests (they love those ready-made condo's),and replace if needed. I know this may sound a tad "anal",
but it is important.

Replace all the seals in the lower end, even if they look ok.
When you get done with the carb, fuel pump and
the lower unit has been re-installed and pressure tested, remove the plugs, turn it over until it quits spitting mystery oil.
Replace the plugs, fill the lower unit with lube, and crank that puppy up. I wish I were there. I love bringing good old motors back to life!

------------------
Time to change my tagline
