my 1957 johnson 35 has a generator. in reading other threads i have gathered i need the box with a voltage regulator. is that correct? is there any way around that such as using a more readily available voltage regulator or does anybody have the box i need?i would appreciate any suggestions. i do plan on running some accessories so would like to get it working.

That regulator is 12V negative ground, "A" circuit field, 10 amp current. You will look long and hard finding anything that meets teh qualifications. So I'll help you. There is a Harley Davidson one. There also is a Harley solid state regulator. Whatever you get, it MUST be 10 amp. Higher amps will burn up the generator armature. No car that I know of has only a 10 amp charging circuit. Maybe a tractor.

The OMC/Johnson one is available. Yes it is about 100 bucks.

Equally as hard to find is the extra large solenoid box. Alot of the generators I have needed rebuilding as well.

SO.....for those looking to do the generator, after you buy the regulator, generator, bracket, belt, large solenoid box, etc etc etc it may be easier to use a solar charger or just charge the battery every once in a while. The generators dont put out a ton of juice anyways, they did not have all the fancy gadgets that they do now back in 1957 :)

Of course Im a complete hypocrite in saying this, I still do the generator set ups in my motors, but I never said Im smart.

Everybody comments the DC generator has low output. Hey, it puts out 10 amps at less than full throttle. Compare that to the 5 or 6 amps most new motors put out. And it's regulated, unlike all those new motors where everybody writes in to some forum, complaining their motor cooks their battery at 17 volts. OK, admittedly it doesn't put out anything at idle.
