1957 johnson 3 hp water pump

I was running my 1957 3 hp johnson JW14 at "start" throttle when it made a funny noise, I dropped the throttle to "slow" and noticed no water was coming from the exhaust holes, and that there was a funny "burning" oil smell. I immediately stopped the motor and rowed home. I suspect the water pump impeller is gone. I tried to start the motor in a test tank, but it wouldn't start, it makes a funny "whoosh" noise. It turns over fine, and seems to have good compression. What should I do...what damage do I need to consider to the powerhead and how do I assess it? Thanks

Welcome to Iboats!<br /><br />Pull the plugs and see if they're wet with water. Overheating on the 3hp will often lead to a blown head gasket allowing water into the combustion chamber.<br />Can you get a hold of a compression tester to do a proper test?<br />The impeller should be replaced as on any outboard, every few years or sooner in salt water. Notwithstanding use.
