I have a 57 18 hp johnson I purchased recently.I converted it to a fuel pump first thing. I replaced the impeller, coils, lower gear oil, plugs, compression is 130 on both cylinders. Everything else looked good so I proceeded from there. I got her running but now she is fouling plugs and will not fire. I let it sit over night and gave her a couple pulls this morning she tried to start put couldn't get going. Maybe points and condensers?????I am getting frustrated quickly please help.

yeah I am new to the old outboards. I took it into a old marine mechanic, to overhaul it.On my relpacement part list they gave me stated 130. Isn't usually around 80 on each cylinder.I think they half *** my motor.Cause I am resorting to this site.

I would check out the points, probably dirty/corroded= no spark= wet plugs. Did you put new plug wires on or trim the old ones back when you installed the new coils? Could be a stuck float if the carb hasn`t been serviced and flooding the motor.

Ditto. Get your own comrpession gauge for about $20 and see what you really have. If they're over 65psi in each cylinder and within 10% of each other you should be ok. Pull the flywheel and replace the points an condensers too. You can get a tune up kit here at iboat for about $25. New spark plugs and s'plugs wires 7mm copper core available at NAPA), along with the new coils you've already installed and you'll have a brand new ignition system. I would also get a carb rebuild kit while you're at it for another $25. For $50 you can have a motor that should run great for years. Check out this link. It can walk you through all the steps of gettin' her up and running. You got a great motor there. She's worth the effort.
