Just bought an antique Evinrude. I haven't owned an outboard for years (recent Shamrock inboard owner) and I found some good info on this board. The sale came up on Craigslist in my area (Brevard County, central FL, atlantic coast). I had a couple of generic questions to get started...

1- Am I in the right forum for these topics, or is there an antique forum?
2- IF I'm in the right place.... Are there antique powerheads available? long story, but the upper piston is seized (RUST RUST RUST)
3- Are there online parts places with parts for engines this old?

I have done a little research, so I'll keep doing that for now, just wanted to introduce myself and make sure I"m int he right place.

thanks. Will post some pics later of the frozen piston.

Hi Shinola...and welcome!

You're in the correct forum; there are a lot of 50's OMC guys here. The board prefers PM's for buy/sell activities; but if people get an idea of what you might be needing...they can help you out in that manner.

If you haven't already discovered the Antique Outboard Motor folks over at AOMCI....that would be another good source for parts and advice. AOMCI.org has a buy/sell section that's free.

The fastwin 18's were made for so many years that parts should never be a problem. I have a 1960 18.....but I've heard a lot of people here say that the 57 was one of the best years.... :)

Good luck; your motor is recent enough that it can be made reliable; but old enough to get you wishing that it could talk and tell you it's stories :)

Re: 1957 Evinrude Fastwin 18

Welcome aboard Shinola. Great Handle. I just finished resurrecting a '57 Fastwin and Sunday took it out for its maiden run. Works great! I had to do quite a bit to bring it back from the grave so I might have a few answers for you along the way. I get most of my maintenance type parts, (carb kits, ignition components, impellers, seals etc from marineengines.com. they have great digital parts diagrams (http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2833/ITEM_283300001.htm) that are really helpful. You can get those same parts right here on iBoats too but I personally haven't done that so I can't say one way or the other if the prices compare or not. You'll have to research that for yourself.Pistons, rings, gears etc. are a bit harder to track down but ebay, marine salvage yards, AOMCI (as SeaKay12 pointed out) or even craigslist if you can find a cheap parts motor, are all good sources for those parts. There were more outboards made and sold in '56 than any year before or since so there are A LOT of these old motors still around and IMHO the '57 Fastwin is the sweetest of the bunch. While these motors are old, they are most certainly not rare. You CAN track down parts. Here's a link that will help a lot. It's not your exact motor but virtually the same.http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/06/columns/max/index6.htm
Finally, even though they are old, they are still very reliable and cheap outboards and are easy to work on.

Here's a list of some salvage yards that have proven helpful and fair. It's part of the "Secret File" that's linked at the top of this forum in the stickies....

So much depends on where you live. Out here in SoCal there are relatively few sources of stuff that old; in the midwest and back east they are much more prolific.
