Thanks to everyone on this forum I got the fly wheel off, using a three bolt hormonic balancer puller some grade 8 bolts and some washers thanks.the two coil housings looked cracked. Points don't look too bad.A little oil in the erea.Motor runs for a few minutes then starts to buck then slowly dies. How do I tell if the oil seal is bad and how do I get to it.Thank you driftwood.

Re: 1957 18 evinrude fastwin help

My advice is to leave the seal alone unless/until you determine that it is leaking for sure. It is too difficult to change without the special tool. You will need two new coils. I believe they sell them here at iboats. Wouldn't hurt to get some new condensers too. Points???

Remove the armature plate (4 phillips head screws) and the mounting ring underneath, clean everything up and lubricate the mounting assy Very Lightly with some grease. Grease from that area often gets splattered out all over the armature plate and is mistaken for an oil seal leak. Oil from the seal is clear, like the fuel that it is...at least until it gets mixed with grease. Replace the spark plug wires if there is any doubt about them. Use "wire" wire, not carbon core automotive wire.

Slide the new coils in/out until the laminations are flush with the machined areas on the posts where they mount. That sets the gap between the coil and magnets in the flywheel. Make sure the coil wires are tucked back to where they won't drag on the cam or flywheel. Likewise, keep the condenser wires down so they don't stick up and rub the underside of the flywheel. Clean and gap the points to .020" at highest point on the cam.

The flywheel and shaft must be clean and dry before installing the flywheel. Torque the flywheel nut to 40-45 ft/lbs.

That motor can run like new if everything else is OK.
