I am considering purchasing a 56 that is currently rigged with twin 35's from the same era but perhaps not from the factory. Can anyone comment if they ever came with twins from the factory?

The boat appears to be unmolested and in fair/good original shape.

Thanks GBF

Glass
Actually I should say I think glass, I wasnt aware that they even made tins way back then.

Wood I looked your thread over watching your project and this is what got me thinking I need another project. I like the lines on these LS boats, and am really like what you are doing with yours.

If it's glass then YES back in the 50's it was pretty common for the runabouts to be ordered with twin 35's on em. If you restore your boat I'd recommend beefing the transom up to about 1 3/4" to handle em.

Re: 1956 Lone Star

I have quite a bit of research to complete before I grab this one, hope it?s still there by the time I complete my efforts.
The seller indicated there are 2 push button starter buttons on the dash and no key, which I have never seen before.

All of the original hardware is intact, and the interior appears original and in good shape.
Thanks for the transom idea, I am sure I will go through it like you did yours.

Re: 1956 Lone Star

Well I purchased the boat today , I know it's a Lone Star, the model is "Fleetwood sport" but I havent been able to figure out what year yet. The hull ID tag is gone, and the twin 35 Johnsons are "sea king" models All I have on them is the serial # from the freeze plug 1549808 and 1549745. These are long shaft outboards. The boat looks like it was built for twins out of the factory, I have 2 push button start buttons on the original dash. Can anyone help me ID the year of the boat and the year of the motors?

Pictues on the way..

Look down on the Leg or under the cowling. Model numbers should be something like...

Cool pair of motors you got there. They'll look great once they're painted and running. You got lucky, most folks think the '57ish models were the best looking/running old Johnson's you could get. While they used the same basic motors for many years, as they got in to the early '60s all of the cowls became fiberglass and kind of ugly and boring, but the old garnet and silver, aluminum cowled motors are much sought after. If you need any info on them look here and online for "Big Twin" Johnsons and you'll find tons of great links. Keep the updates coming. Good luck!

Twin 35's is just soooo cool. It's not the same cowling as my '56 so I'm guessing '57 or '58. The ID tag on mine is right in between the two transom clamps.

Re: 1956 Lone Star

I have been looking all over these motors for the tags but am leaning towards 57's too. So many cool things on these motors. They have both external boxes with all the electronic starter stuff, all fittings for prasure tanks and the tanks too.

I dont see much information on "Fleetwood Sport" -Lone Star boats. But I think it's early 60"s. The boat was set up for twins, but I dont think these are the originals because the Fleetwoods didnt come out till after 1960 I think.

Lot's of fun digging around.

Building the motor stands tonight

Found the #'s under 50 years of grease and dirt right where you suggested. Now I can dig around and get these babies cleaned and tuned up. The motors are RDE-19's

I built 2 of the motor stands last night, they came out great, I was concerned about the 35's being too long to fit on the stand, but they will fit, by inches, but they will fit. Once they are off the boat, I can continue with the restoration of the boat. It's stripped down well right now, and it looks like I have everything I need. The steering system was updated at some point to a cable system, but I think this will require some modifications to provide a better system. Need to find a steering wheel, that fits the ear this boat was made.

Near as I can tell the boat is from 60 or 61, I don?t see much information on the Fleetwood-Sport model. Once I find this out for sure I will start a thread with correct data, and pictures of the project. Thanks to all who have helped me get started on this project, I have learned so much from others here.
