First let me say, this is the best forum , The people on here are"very good" ..Thank You.. You have saved me alot of trouble on my motors..

Model QD17R Serial 1453801
In the middle of decarbing , running better and better, will not go into gear without moving shift lever way to many times. acts like it wants to ,can here a little grinding, almost like it's out of ajustment, took side plate off, linkages are bolted tight, no slop in travel, gear lube was murky, no metal shavings, will drop into R and after a bit F would really like to NOT take the lower unit apart.. Thoughts? Thanks, Scott

Re: 1956 johnson 10 shift problem

After a little more inspection, pulling the six screws at the bottom of the unit, found metal shavings on screw tips on three of the six, Need to stop looking for the life-line and just start swimming,,, Off to get the Correct manuel.

Thanks for the time..

Way to go Sroop, no shame in digging in, and finding the problem for yourself, and the correct manual is a HUGE tool for any motor.

I have done lots of older motors, feel free to ask any questions you have as you proceed.

Very simple motors, and a great place to start.
