1956 Evinrude

As I have posted in an earlier post I have inherited a boat with the 1956 Evinrude attached. I have been working on getting the engine running and I believe the engine will be fine, but the fuel tank that came with the boat was rusted beyond the ability to safely use it. Can someone give me some tips on setting up a new tank for this engine. This engine, as I am sure most of you are aware, requires a pressure line from the crankcase to the tank and a line for the fuel. Any help on setting up a new tank would be appreciated.

You have two basic choices, either find a good pressure tank, or convert the motor to a fuel pump system so it will run on a regular non-pressure tank. You didn't say what size the motor is. Some are easier to convert than others. Whatever way you decide to go, you will have to invest a few dollars.

BTW, don't throw away the fuel connector on the pressure tank hose. New ones are available--for about $100.

I've got a 1958 Johnson 5.5hp that came with three pressurized tanks. I obviously got lucky...but you may want to check ebay.

A smaller(3 gal) tank could be shipped and you can probably find one in decent shape. The ones is perfect condition hold value really well for collectors.

I would lean toward this option rather than modifying it to be an attached tank unless you would prefer it that way for other reasons.
