Well, got the coils, condensers, points, plug wires, and plugs changed. Got the carb cleaned out and put back together. (found many little black bits in the carb..maybe fuel line or crumbling gasket)
What should I do next with my motor. Would like to be sure I am taking care of it and preventing its demise?its old.
I am new to the world of motors but have so far thoroughly enjoyed learning about and working on my 56 evinrude.
I am also very thankful to all of the helpful and knowledgeable people on this forum. Could not have gotten this far without you?many thanks?
So, whats next? (lower unit?)

The black bits are probably from your old fuel lines which need replacing.
I would replace the water pump impeller or at least check to see if it's taken a set (hardened) or has dry rot cracks in the rubber.
Lastly, replace lower unit oil and check it after the first run. If it's milky or has visible water in the lower unit, I'd replace the seals. If your tank is old, you might consider new o-rings in the fuel line connector, and a $25 tank rebuild kit for your pressure tank.

You're almost there. If you need the parts manual I have it on PDF, send me a PM with your request and email address.

Is there a link that will walk me through the process? The one for doing the coils was great. Not even sure where the water pump impeller is or how to get to it.
Where do I find a new fuel line? I read on here that its hard to get the duel pressure fuel line system anymore?.any ideas where I could find one?

samo- sent you my email. Thanks

Water pump sits on top of the lower unit. You have to drop the lower unit to get to it. Here's a link to 2-line pressure hose I see on Ebay:

For fuel line I use 3/16 id line that you can buy at any auto parts store. I usually get about 10-12 ft and cut in half and use zip ties to keep it together. The newer line is alcohol resistant.

As mentioned you can just double up single line. You can also get it here: nymarine.ca

As for the impeller. It's easy. There is an oval plate halfway down the leg with 2 screws holding it on. remove the plate. IN here is the shift rod connector. remove entirely the lower one. Then remove the 4 small bolts and one big one to drop the LU. Don't drop it on your foot. It will come right out. The impeller is under the little plastic housing. 3 or 4 small screws. Then slide it up the shaft. watch the little pin that turns the impeller, don't lose it. Put new impeller in housing first. Lube up the housing with dishwashing soap or light oil or something. Turn it in counter clockwise (it'll be tight) then slide down driveshaft and line up lil pin and put it all back together.
