1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15. Where to begin?

I recently purchased a 1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15 which I would like to restore. It seems to be mechanically sound (i.e. it runs). So I guess my restoration will be mostly cosmetic. As you can see from the pictures, the previous owner put a pretty ugly paint job on the exterior, it looks like there are at least two, if not three layers of paint. I would mostly like information on how to begin: how to clean off the old paint (what tools/equipment to use), how to repaint, where to get the factory colors, etc. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, I think I remember seeing that advertised maybe? Whereabouts did you get it? Looks like it was painted with a brush! LOL

Im glad you want to cosmetically restore her. To save yourself a million hours of labour, I have found that finding someone that does soda blasting will save your fingers extreme torture. Get it down to the bare metal, spray with self etching primer (necessary for aluminum) the paint. This is where I buy my paint/decals

Thanks. I found this on Craigslist in Kansas City, MO. The item was actually in Rantoul, KS.

Excellent motors. You won't be wasting your time or money restoring this one. Yea, like Chris says, nymarine is the best place to get paint, decals and medallions for that motor. They even have a nice photo gallery of restored motors, like yours. Tune up and other consumable parts are available here at iboats.

Here's my next question: Can a guy get by with aerosol paints and primers? I don't currently have a compressor or paint gun so I planned on doing everything with aerosols, but I don't want to waste my time if the paint won't adhere properly. Is it worth doing if you don't have a paint gun, or should I wait until I have the gun and compressor and only do it once?

Do any mechanical maintenance before you paint it. You don't want to spoil a nice new expensive paint job because you had to tear it down for a water pump or gearcase seals. Also, I am a firm believer in pulling the powerhead and replace the lower main bearing seal on those motors. Those seals were the #1 hidden killer of that model.

nymarine has the paint available in rattle cans.

You can do a really good job with aerosols if you do the prep work right, follow the tips already given.
