I just purchased a 1955 CD-12 Johnson 5.5. The tank says to mix one half a pint of SEA 30 oil per gallon of gas. The dealer said to use a 25-1 mix using outboard oil. What do you think?

Hi Cap...Welcome to iboats.

Take the advice of the dealer. Start using the 30 weight and you'll get more carbon than ya' can shake a stick at. Use the TCW-3 at 25:1.

Yep, 24:1 ratio (1 quart TC-W3 rated oil per 6 gallons of regular gas) is the way to go. It's a tad leaner than the original 16:1 due to the better oil quality, but not so lean that the motor will want to toss connecting rods out the side of the crankcase...
- Scott

Thanks for the advice. I was concerned with what the proper ratio is with TCW-3 and you've confirmed my dealers advice. I never intendeded to use the 16:1 30w mix. Can you imagine the smoke that would put out? Thanks
