What are some things I can do to keep this engine running excellent. I am automotive mechanic so I do know my way around a internal combustion engine.

I also know that running a engine till the fuel is out helps the carb gaskets, Oil pre-mix isn't the same specs as what is required by modern 2 strokes.Never run it without water on the pump intake.

What are some other good tips to a first time boater.

The engine has excellent compression.
Starts on first pull.
New water pump
New lower unit bushings
New shift linkage
Rebuilt lower unit

A friend at work insists the engine is worth a lot if I repaint it and it looks good because it runs excellent. Just for kicks what do you think this engine would sell for? I'm not intrested in selling it however (to me its a 10,000 engine)

Re: 1955 Johnson 25hp

i actually like to buy motor with patenta rather that repainted. i believe 1955 was a 24:1 fuel: TC-W3 outboard motor oil. keep the carb clean, flush it in a barrel of water after use, water must be atleast 1/2 way up the leg, the water pump needs a couple of inches of water above it to prime. best if stored upright. change the lower unit lube every year before the first freeze. if is a very easy motor to work on.

it was top of the class, in it's day.

Re: 1955 Johnson 25hp

I sold a 1953 Evinrude 25 hp for $300 in nice original shape and completely tuned a year or two ago. Hard to say what a repaint goes for. There is a very limited demand for those old motors and so much supply.

To change the lower unit oil there are two large standard screws on the lower unit below the anticavitation plate. Remove the bottom screw and then the top. Allow the oil to drain. Check oil for signs of water intrusion even if the lower unit has been resealed. Refill by using either an outboard oil pump or a squeeze style oil bottle. Refill from the bottom screw until oil comes out the top hole. Reinstall the top screw then remove the bottle/pump and reinstall the bottom screw. Replace the washers on the vent/drain screws before reinstalling. Use normal 90W outboard lower unit oil.

I'm sure FR would also like me to tell you that the lower crankcase seal in that year was commonly defective and should be replaced.
