Hello guys, new to the forum and just bought my first outboard.

I have a 1955 Johnson Seahorse 10 hp that runs well, but is leaking water badly into the lower unit. I don't know if its coming from the water pump or the propeller shaft seal. I am guessing its from the water pump seeing as how I haven't ran the prop a lot in comparison to time letting it idle in a large water bucket. My questions are what parts would I need for this job and how tough of a job is it?

I've never worked on outboards but these old motors seem like they aren't bad to work on. I've found some sites with exploded diagrams with parts listed, but I would appreciate some guidance on exactly what I would need. Maybe there are kits out there? I don't know.

I appreciate any help,

Kevin

There are kits. You can get one right here at iboats. You will also need some 3M 847 sealer.

Not that bad a job at all.

I found lower unit seal kits for as early as 1958 models, but that is it. Could you help me with finding one for a 55 model?

Thanks

i had to go to vintage motors for a seal kit. the prop shaft diameters are different than the ones in the kit.
i used a spade bit turned upside down to get the shift bushing out works pretty good. good time to check the gears and the clutch dog. pay close attention to the "dogs ears" should be all even, no wear spots.
i bought a chepo hf bearing puller. it really helps. looks like a slide hammer.
