most of them were short, measure from where if sits on transom, the the AV (flat) plate just above the prop. 17inches is short shaft.

Probably a short shaft. The model would be RDL-17s if it were a long shaft. The short model measures 47 15/32" in total length, the long model is 5" longer.

Actually, those motors got changed back and forth, long to short & vice versa just about every time they got put on a different boat. If it is long shaft it will have a very obvious 5" extension piece between the lower unit and midsection. You can't miss it if it is there.
