It seems that my motor will not start unless low speed valve is shut off. After starting, opening low speed valve even a little bit causes engine to stall out. Any ideas? Thanks!

Your carburator may have a gasket on the main nozzle inside the float bowl. That gasket may have deteriorated and come apart. In any case I'd suggest pulling the carb off and having a look in there. Get a carb kit and a float and overhaul it. Being sure to clean everything out thoroughly (meaning remove the "freeze" plugs) and blow all the passages out with compressed air. Good luck

Have a 57 Big Twin 35 hp that had a similar problem, but it was the high speed needle. Only way I could start it was to pump carb bowl full of gas and shut off the high speed needle completely...opening it even a tiny bit flooded and killed the motor. Went through that carb several times, checked and rechecked the float, recleaned it, checked the tips/end of both needles...thinking the high speed was grooved/ruined. Finally gave up and bought a used, rebuilt carb...runs like a top...carb bodies/castings wear out too apparently. Hope this help you figure out/solve your problem.
