1955 evinrude 7.5 hp carb and starting

Greets; I'm rebuilding my Dad's 1955 7.5 HP Evinrude, He bought it New and has all the paper work on it.... Don't think they would get by with the wording today LoL.
I replaced the the impeller, checked compression and spark, also rebuilt the carburetor. The carb on the 7518 model has a sediment bowl, does there need to be a washer between the sediment bowl and body? Reason I ask is when I prime the tank I see fuel running down the outside of the sediment bowl......

Other question - how difficult is it to replace the rope re-coil spring?

that sediment bowl is a fuel filter and needs the gasket #51 to seal the glass bowl . the filter must be carb cleaned and blown dry

the spring takes practice ... search utubes .

It is a sintered material.-----A very good concept and that filter can be cleaned.----Use google to learn about sintered filters.

if handy...with an exacto knife you can make your own circular filter with
gasket material

re-coil spring and sediment bowl washer won't arrive til Monday... I'll send an update once everything is back together. It'll either be more questions or a sigh of relief.

Take the filter out and throw it away
It’s antiquated and not needed

you can always install a small lawn mower filter on the incoming fule line before the "empty" bowl to keep crud away from the carb

New filters 303133 are available for about $10 on the big online auction site. Not my listings.

Those are wonderful filters and need cleaning once in a while.----Nothing wrong with the concept of one of these sintered filters.----Better than modern plastic stuff.

agree... butt those plastic filters are better than no filters and a clogged carb 10 miles from base camp is no fun.

think the neoprene gasket is the issue for fuel leaking out of the bowl. Bowl has to seal tightly at the bottom of the carb. (and keep the sintered filter in the bowl -- do the job very well if not clogged.)

After having a joyful time with the re-coil spring - I may or may-not be, picking my nose with a stump going forward...... I added the washer and that took care of the leak. Thanks guys.

Still not running though...
tank pressurized,
fuel making it to carb - no leaks
Spark and compression is good.
high and low needles backed off 1.5 turns based original owners manual.

Questions:
How wet should the spark plugs be with fuel, after 5 pulls, with plug wires disconnected ?

I tried switching the plug wires to see if that would make a difference..... no luck.
one of the plug wires has a metal clip with the word UP stamped in it. Would that be the top cylinder - makes sense, but the top cylinder has 2 stamped on the power head.

I think the spark plugs should be saturated with fuel after 5 pulls - Thoughts?

Any information is appreciated.

Have you tried squirting a little premix in the carb throat to see if it will kick off?

Try opening the low speed 1 to 1 1/2 turns after gently seating, 3/4 turn for the high speed.

Thanks for the replies. Here's what I have.
1. pre-mix into carb throat did not work - no changes \ no excitement like it wanted ti start either.

2. Yes - but.... did not use a jig that's set at a true 1/4". - trying to find out where to get one or how to make one.

3. Based on the previous information the jets don't come into play. However I do have them set at those settings - still disappointed lol

Could the issue be with timing. Like a points and condenser related ? I have not had the flywheel off yet, still focusing on fuel getting to cylinders.
I do have a set of plugs arriving tomorrow, will run same tests again.

Is there a way to determine which plug wire goes to which cylinder ? without taking the flywheel off :)
