The 'ol gal started running rough with about half power at full throttle. At slow speed it was fine except for some sneezes. Every time I'd open it up it would bog down with an occasional surge.... Then finally died at the ramp. Cranking on it , it would fire for 10 seconds then quit. I could see gas in the water behind the motor. What's up?

Losing spark on one cylinder...coil/wires/plug, or time to pull, clean and rebuild the carb. Time for a tuneup in other words.

All these old motors belch excess gas right into the water. Useually just excess unused fuel from the crankcase.
They will of course dump fuel if they are flooded.
what model is your motor? Many share parts with Evinrude/Johnson motors.
