Re: 1954 era outboards

The nice thing is that the 3 & 10 are well engineered motors. The 3 is light and even cute, but it also runs great and the weedless skeg really works. The 10-horse is powerful enough to deliver good speed on a 14" utility boat. The over-engineered lower unit on the 10 was simultaneously shared with the Evinrude 14 (1950-52) and the 15 (1953-56). The 10?s lower unit was refined a bit for 1955, then went on to remain in service through 1957 on the 10. That lower unit remained in use on the 18 and subsequent 20 and later 25 (69-76)

Further to the original question, what are opinions on the early 25 Big Twins? (1951-54 specifically). Following on the heals of the archaic opposed 22.5 horse and quirky 16 without a neutral or reverse, the 25 Big Twin also benefit from being developed after the revolutionary 10. The 25 looks big, has big displacement and some heft. The lower unit is the same basic design that went on to be the foundation for the 28, 30, 33, most 35s, and post-1970 40s. Prior to 1955 the cowling was still held on by numerous bolts. 1955 was a year of change for them, (the lower transom bracket gaining those rubber biscuit mounts under those U-shaped covers on the midsection) plus the restyled cowl that flips up and off easily. So, opinions?
