1954 10hp QD-15

I posted last week concerning my restoration project.
I have installed points/condenser and coils.
(the coils were cracked and brittle)
I removed the cam and cleaned and greased it then reinstalled.
My problem is the cam is spring loaded, and will not stay in position to adjust the points and reinstall the flywheel.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Take the spring out while you adjust the points and then put it back in afterwards. Is there an inspection hole in the flywheel? If so, then just put it all back together and adjust the points through the hole.

Remove spring to set points as above. I then use a thin screwdriver to hold the cam down while putting the flywheel 'mostly' on. Then take another screwdriver and press down on the cam through the inspection hole and push flywheel down. Now your ready to torque it on. Not too bad once you get the hang of it. A friend may come in handy though.. Good luck!

To install the flywheel: Turn shaft till just before a set of points is almost about to open. Then the cam won't interfere with the points as you simply slide the flywheel straight down and on. Easy.

I don't know about the '54 model, but the '55 model shows an inspection hole in the flywheel. It may be better to adjust your points with the flywheel on, so nothing changes afterwards. Oddly enough, some OMC twins came with inspection holes and some didn't. I had a '58 JW that had two.

Thanks to all for the help. All comments were right on.
I will align the cam lobe away from moving the points, and install the flywheel which does have an inspection hole.
