1953 TN-28 1st Rebuild attempt!!!!

Well, it's time. I thought long and hard on this job.
My brother gave me this TN-28 motor that came with his cabin he bought. 1st observation shows no clutch control handle. The Shaft it connects to is there, but the linkage that connects to that at the bottom is not there as well as the clutch cable. I drained and dropped the lower end unit and after inspecting the water pump, I noticed that the only part of the clutch unit there was the clutch bracket. EM HAVING FUN YETThe good news is, the oil looked good :happy: I am adding up the cost of this rebuild and I'm coming up with about $150.00 ishhh:embarassed: I've located a clutch cable and hardware for the lower unit and the linkage up top minus the handle. Game on boys...My question is how to feed the linkage from the lower end the linkage up top? I have read lots of post on this site and am very amazed of your expertise and knowledge. I ordered carb parts / tune up parts and lower end gaskets from *****************. I look forward to one day soon hearing and smelling this war bird in the tank. I would appreciate any and all help through this adventure.

If I remember correctly, the earlier version didn't have a clutch, they just started in gear. If you want to get it going on the cheap, don't worry about the clutch cable. Get the engine running and see if engine works for you and then fix the clutch later.

Clearly has the clutch from the pics. Getting all of the lower together and back on was extremely difficult for me. If I remember correctly, bolting the lower back on is part of what seals all of the pump together. You also have to make sure the shaft seal near the power head is in place. Plus the water tube - Plus the cable tube - all lined up perfectly as you're squeezing it together. But as far as the cable, I just snaked it up the tube with some grease using gloves and continually rotating it. I had the linkage still attached hanging on the end. Pinch and roll - pinch and roll all the way up. I'm sure High Trim or others can elaborate.
You can still get the upper clutch parts from BRP, but you need to know the numbers. Send me a PM if you need a parts schematic.
Only took about $50 to get mine going so that secret carb kit you got must have been $100..Lol
Another important oversight is the filter in the tank.

Yeah as Bonzo stated, the TN28 has the clutch. I would send you a handle, I used to have a lot, but believe it or not, over the last few years have sent them all out to iboats members. All out sorry, just looked. A wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize will get you one on the cheap Im sure of it.

The TN28 parts manual does not help much for re assemble as you can see. Also the seal assembly mentioned above.





EDIT: I now see you know about the aomci forum, you posted on it, great. If Lloyd posts, listen. He really knows these T and H series motors.

Looked again for a shift handle, but no cigar. Used to have a dozen or so TN28s, but moved them all out. Once tuned, they do idle nice and run amazing! Just getting them there sometimes can be a challenge. If I remember right, the ideal setting on the low speed needle (bent arm under intake manifold) was 5/8 out from seated on just about all of the ones I tuned. I did find a whole drive shaft setup left in the parts rooms!

Thanks to all that posted back to me. Very, very much appreciated. You can see in the attached pics, what I bought on E-bay. Clutch picture seems to be missing some key parts above the spring that helps to mount it to the lower unit. I need to order those I see. I also believe by the clutch cable picture attached that where it meets the clutch braket, it's upside down! Am I right? Bonzoscott, you mention a tube to slide the clutch cable up into twisting, greasing etc.. I see a bronze tube that will slide into a rubber grommet (witch I ordered), for the water pump, but that's it. Should there be a 2nd tube? Does anyone have a pic as to this tube thing for my clutch cable? I also see you mentioned the Shaft seal, spring and washer towards the power head. My seal was nicked up pretty good. I will have to hunt one down. Also, those parts are pretty lose on the shaft it seems, but than again, I remember seeing on another post, there suppose to be right? My carb kit was a few gaskets is all. I will order 2 leather boots for the plunger from Lloyd. ( I need his Zip Code). I bought a Sierra float that I will sand down and re-drill to fit. I assume I will have to sand the top down to the point where the clip pin rests flat to be attached with screw. Who is BRP for clutch parts? Thanks.. I will soak carb and tank screen in 100% acetone.

JB - Sorry, weather finally straightening up hear and spending less time on the computer. I knew you were missing some clutch parts but figured the tube should be in there. You may have a hard time finding that without getting a parts motor. It is 302361 (short shaft) or 302369 (long shaft). I'll email you some stuff that may help. Basically just things I've collected about the TN.
If you haven't done so yet, you can probably use your old float, sanded a bit then coated in model RC airplane dope. Do not sand or steel wool the needle. Take inventory of all the parts you're missing and Both Google & Ebay those numbers. Good Luck!
