Re: 1940 Starcraft

This boat shows an interesting fore runner of how ours are built. Can you tell us how the seams are held together? I can see rivets on the upper portions but no sign of them on lower hull. The stern shows no rivets unless the paint is hiding them. I have seen stern corner brackets like you have for sale on ebay with the star.

Agree with observation of the shape of the hull. At first I thought canoe inspired but the dory is a better description.

And if you have not painted the exterior you might consider just polishing the aluminum. I am polishing the trim on my Jet and it is gleaming.

Keep us posted with pics. You might look into photobucket to post them. Many of use that service, it is free and fairly intuitive to use.

60 degrees this weekend, going to haul mine out and get back to work in earnest.

Rivets , but on the sides about a half an inch of metal is folded back almost to touching its self, and the stern has a half inch bent at a 90 ,and slides into the sides and is pressed,or crimped or whatever, can`t tell if it`s welded, spot welded or just pressed, has lead on all the seam`s,very good eye I had to go look again myself, thank you.

Of course! That's why the paint is peeling. It won't stick to the galvanized unless it oxidizes giving the paint something to grip to just like a galvanized roof.

Great observation and research.

Borntohunt, can you take pics of the original paper work to help sort this out?

Thanks, Albert

I thought I had the original papers but I don't, the ones I have are just were they got it registered in Texas around 75.

The boat is not at my house right now, and I don't know when I will see it again. I do know that alot of stuff is held together with ribets. And the bottom all the way is one piece it has a like channel running down the center of the bottom of the boat, held on with ribets I believe.

Re: 1940 Starcraft

Thats a great looking boat. I thought in the picture of the bow the metal looked liked glavanized metal more than aluminum. Probably just me. In any case, that is history in its self. Since its been in the family so long, any chance of older pics of it? Heck, I could use that boat just to help me lose weight by rowing. Dale

Yes I know I have 1 pic of it when I was little of my dad rowing it around with me lol I could ask my Great Grandpa next time I see him if he has any but idk.

Re: 1940 Starcraft

I used a set of Ryobi polishing pads from Home Depot on my grinder out in the shop along with some polishing compound I bought from Midway Supply. You can go to youtube and type polishing aluminum and watch that dude and learn enough about it to do a fair job of polishing up your own stuff.

And you folks should do some research first and find out how to treat that galvanized metal before priming and painting. What we do with aluminum might be BAD for galvanized:eek:

Re: 1940 Starcraft

Well my Grandpa and me worked on the boat some what this weekend, not getting near as much done as we did the weekend before due to rain (I'm going to be a weather man so I can lie 90% of the time and keep my job). It is probably going to be sand blasted this week, now that 85% of the outside paint is gone and this inside paint is all still there, so hopefully going to primer it next friday or saturday and paint following the day after since I will be on spring break. Going to be extremely nice when were done!

There are lots of aluminum polishes out there. I found this one at an automotive supply.

Blue Magic metal polish cream. Works quickly and well. It is just a polish so scratches will not disappear.

I'm thinking about trying to send a E-Mail to TPWD, I mean it's registered with them so surely they can tell me.

Oh and something else Grandpa, I get out of school at 1:30 this Friday for Spring Break, so by 1:31 I'll be hauling but out there, maybe we can spray primer Friday, should be there around 2 - 2:15, oh and as long as y'all don't have anything going on!
