Hi. I have a 1937 Evinrude Scout, model num 4201-03283. Does anyone have any information on this model that they can share, or know of websites that might have info?

This hasn't been running in some time. My father had it in the basement and I assume hasn't been running in years. I'm sure I will need to replace points, electrics, etc.. as well as clean all internals to get it running, but didn't want to start to break it down without some modicum of info first.

Schematics / diagrams, parts lists, spark plug designation and where to get replacement parts would be great to have.

Thanks,

John

Howdy, JMertz.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Try Googling up the Antique Outboard Motor Club International (aomci).

Good luck. :)

I was going to say, as JB mentioned, if you are in the US, the boys at aomci.org will be best to guide you. If you are in Canada, as I am, mapleleafchapter.org is the Canadian branch of the antique motor club.

You know right off that the carb will need to be cleaned/rebuilt. Water pump replaced, and likely the ignition will need to be gone over. Check the compression on her to start and go from there. Keep us updated.

The Ken Cook Company would be a great source for a service manual

www.outboardbooks.com

Engine Blade and Prop may be able to help you on the parts......maybe. The AOMCI is a good place to start too.

Well, I posted at the AOMCI and while I got lots of people looking at the post and obviously reading, I got no replies. So I suppose that means there aren't any forum users there who have both seen my post / questions, and have any information to share.

It's mainly the ignition that I would like to get a handle on. All the rest is pretty straightforward and my own experience probably gives me enough information to get that right. I just haven't worked on old ignitions at all though, so I'll have to figure out how they are engineered.

thanks for your suggestions here.

Engine Blade and Prop has a decent New Old Stock selection for these old timers. I would give them a try. http://www.ebp-online.com/

As far as the ignition goes, I would start by cleaning the points and polishing them up and see if you get fire. If not, then I would try changing the spark plug leads. These oldies are actually easier to coax back to life, than one would believe.

Not sure why nobody at AOMCI responded. I just did. I just aquired a 47 Ranger which is very similar. I don't have any direct experience with your motor but will shortly. I tried to answer you question over there at a basic level. This will bump it back up to the top so a member with more direct experience will see it. I have to admit that I didn't see it myself until I just read this post. Maybe it was wierd time of the day or something and it just got bumped down to quickly.

AOMCI is definately the right place for what you have. Be patient.

Re: 1937 Ev Scout

outboardbooks.com not only has shop manuals, but parts lists and owner's manuals too. My cousin is an avid collector of antique J/E motors. I gave him a 30's vintage Evinrude Elto that he would never, ever had gotten started w/o the owners manual, bc it had a really funky nonobvious routine to prime and start. I highly recommend getting all three, if you're serious at all. Don't expect people to share for free what they had to buy, bc it's likely not going to happen. J/E/Elto are the only motors you can always buy this stuff, and it's not that expensive.
