i have a evinrude fastwin with the numbers 15034 above 50299. what year is it? its sat in a garage for 15+ years without being run.

i bought a new gas line that runs from the tank to the outboard so that is fine. the can was used last year with no problems. there is a little bit of stuff in the fuel filter canister thing but the filter looks pretty clean.

when it starts it will run fine for a couple seconds and then start to idle really low and eventually quit on its own. it will start a few times in a row then it needs to sit for 5 minutes and then it will run again. when it does run and i rev it in neutral it will up the rpms pretty good but not nearly as much as i thought and then it will just die at higher rpms. dies quickly like someone pushed the kill switch.

it smokes quite a bit but im not sure if that means anything. where should the high and low speed dials be set at? rich, lean, or in the middle?

im using new gas and oil mixed at 50:1. is this the correct mix for it? what spark plugs should i use in it? should i buy some seafoam to clean out any possible crap thats in it?

one last thing...when its in gear it starts and runs better but then quits suddenly like it usually does. thanks for any help

welcome to iboats. here's a link to the correct manual. http://www.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1961&ID=60547 it's a 1961, after sitting that long, the carbs need to be cleaned, and rebuilt, the impeller needs to be replaced, the leg of the engine needs to be submerged in water 1/2 up to run. parts at the top of this page evinrude parts, if not there try laingsoutboard.com. here's another link to great info. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

I have a lot of fun working on old motors. I am not an expert but have fiddled with them enough to make some suggestions. In order to get that motor working well you will have to spend roughly $150 in parts. You can find out how to fix it up by going to http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/ and look at the tune up projects there. Your motor is similar to every old OMC of that era. The cost is minimal when you compare that to a new motor!

More than likely you have ignition problems. A very good chance of bad coils. Pull the flywheel and take a look-see.

The correct fuel:eek:il ratio for that engine is 24:1.

There are a few things you can do with no money. Fixing the problem with your outboard isn't one of them, most likely.

You need to check compression (borrow a compression tester). You need to check for spark in both cylinders. (free)

You probably also need to clean the carburetor and install a fresh carburetor kit, including a new float. (nothing free there).

The problem is that, after identifying the problem with your outboard, you'll have to spend some money to repair what's defective. It may well need new coils, since the orginals have probably perished.

The carb kit isn't all that expensive, but you'll also need a gallon can of carburetor cleaner with a basket.

It's a water-cooled outboard, and after that many years, I guarantee that the water pump impeller is finished. Another expense, and one you must fix, or the motor will soon be junk.

Figure on spending over $100 to get this outboard running properly.

Re: 18hp evinrude fastwin wont keep running

so will 50:1 mix hurt it or make it run bad? i just mixed up 20 litres of mix for it but i guess i can always throw that in my truck.

it spits out quite a bit of water out the back, would i still need a new water pump? i also noticed that it runs a little better if i put the gas tank up on the boat beside the motor instead of on the ground. would this mean a weak fuel pump or should the gas tank be somewhat level with the motor instead of 4-5ft below it?

i guess ill have to save some cash to buy some parts if i want to get out on the water. $100 isnt that bad to get it running.

where should i set the hi and low speed dials? rich, lean, in the middle?

Re: 18hp evinrude fastwin wont keep running

Just calculate how much fuel yuo have in the tank and add enough oil to bring it up to 24:1. It doesn't have to be precise.

The water pump impeller might shed some vanes. Doesn't pay to gamble with it.

4-5 feet is quite a way to expect the pump to lift fuel. Raise the tank if you can.

The knobs are meaningless. They can be installed on the shafts in any position. Open the high speed needle 3/4 turn from lightly closed and the slow speed one 1-1/2 turn. This is only for beginning. Adjust for best running from there, then put the knobs on mid-scale.

Re: 18hp evinrude fastwin wont keep running

well i was playing with the old beast again today. it did help some to have the gas tank at the same height as the motor instead of 4-5ft below it. the clear fuel filter thing always stays full of gas so im guessing the fuel pump is ok?

it will only idle for a few seconds on its own before it stalls. when its in neutral i can give it gas (by moving that lever by the carb not by the normal hand throttle cuz its neutral) but it will only keep running if i pump the gas."floor it" for too long (im talking a second or less) and it will die. sometimes if i hold it right down it will rev up and the rpms will stay up but nowhere near what it should be. ive never heard it run good before but from playing with a bunch of other small engines id say its only making 1/4 power/rpms that it should be. sometimes it backfires when it quits too.

it also makes a bunch of weird sounds when its running. it smokes pretty bad when it does run although it didnt smoke at all for about 10 seconds the one time...

i have little to no money to spend on this thing and a bunch of friends that want to go fishing. they are paying for gas for each trip, but unfortunatly not parts to fix it so i want to try and pinpoint what needs to be fixed so i dont have to spend more money than i have to.

It takes money. Wait until you get some then you will be boating reliably and safely. In my experience, buying another motor in running condition is usually cheaper than fixing one that doesn't run.
If the friends really want to go out, they'll chip in more. If you're just playing around, fine, but old, stale motors need parts and parts are expensive.
