Just bought this boat.... The previous owner was oblivious so, as far as any history I am going in blind.... The engine is a 1976 ford 302 OMC 175. Engine would fire once in a while but not run, Ignition system and timing were correct and ready to run.... I pulled both valve covers. Both have milky fluid, seeming to be oil and water but, also smells of fuel! The oil in the pan and on the dipstick is clean and normal... Found cylinder #8 has a bent exhaust valve. Is it possible that this one bent valve is causing this problem on both sides on the top end only, with the fuel and water in the valve covers?

Also is there an effective way to clean scale out of the same engines exhaust manifolds?

Would love some input... thank you

Hard to say without being there to look at it. But it SHOULD run on at least 7 cylinders...'nutcase

you can try a long thin metal rod in the water passage to de scale. use with water or air to blow it out.

if there is a moisture residue in the engine it will often collect in the valve covers as it evaporates and condenses in there. Run the engine (on muffs) with the valve cover oil fill caps off to help evap the moisture to outside. May take awhile.

Re: 175 OMC bent valve

Plan on pulling and disassembly. No way a bent valve on one side put water/oil in both banks. Clean oil in the pan is just the PO's way to cover up a cracked block/head. As far as fuel in oil, could be carb, could be fuel pump. Check that both are marine prior to putting any money into parts. Sounds like a real project. IMHO, it's gonna be expensive. Tear it down, list what you think you might need on paper and decide if it needs parted out on ebay or if it's even feasible to take on the project. your wallet will know...
