175 evinrude lower unit

I have a 1997 175 evinrude ocean pro change the water pump and i remove the pump housing and the drive shaft moves like a bearing is going out with the water pump off is this normal for the drive shaft to do this. THANKS!

Only if you plan on running it without the pump housing.
