175 1980 evinrude no power

i got caught up on workin on my 175 hp evinrude and it ran good out of water then when i took it to the lake yesterday it wouldnt go into gear sounded like the shafts were meshing like a tranny with bad syncros, it also when i would give it throttle it would just cough for a minute and die. top speed of 3mph

Check your shift linkage for proper adjustment between F-N-R. The engine may not be running on all 6 cyls. Check for spark with a spark checker or inductive timing light.
