relatively new to boating and want some opinions. i have a 16ft a hellas. tri haul that currently has a 25 horse johnson on it. the motor is to small for the boat. it will not get up on plane, and with 2 people aboard it does about 17 mph. i am getting ready to buy a 40 hp for the boat because i cant beat the deal. will the boat get on plane and cruise farely well? not looking to be a speed demon out there but atleast want to plane out ha. what you guys think???

Assuming that the replacement outboard is running great I think it should plane... also be sure you are properly propped what are your RPM at WOT?

Depending on the type of boat, a 40HP would be on the low end (I think). We probably need some more information on the boat - pictures would be a little better.

A 16' fiberglass tri-hull from the 70's or 80's would likely be rated between 65 and 100 HP depending on the manufacturer. A 16' Aluminum tri-hull could get away with considerably less.

What does the capacity plate call for?

It is a 86 mirage tri haul. Capacity plate maxs out at 115

I used to have a 15ft tri-hull with a 50hp motor (rated for 85hp). Top speed was 26mph with an aluminum prop and 28mph with a stainless. With a 40hp motor you could probably expect about 20-24mph tops.

Honestly, if it's rated for 115hp, I'd be looking for a 75hp+ motor.

I agree it sounds underpowered. And, dude, there's no such thing as a tri-haul. It's a tri-HULL.

It will probably plane under light load and good conditions, but you will hate it, and it will be a pain in the butt. Put a few more people and add some rough water, and its back to hull speed for you.

I owned a 15' fiberglass trihull with a Merc 80 on it, and would not have wanted any less motor...

If you're here to seek advice, be prepared to be corrected when you're incorrect. There's no malice iin it, and I'm not the only one here who cringes when someone tells about their new tri-haul. Lighten up.

I'm guessing that you should be turning 4,500-5,000 rpm. 3,200-3,400 is way to low.

I would expect that rated at 115hp, you won't get on plane at all with a 40. Maybe with one person and no gear it'll get up there, but I doubt it. The guys are right ... you want 75+HP.
