Re: 165 Mercruiser Leaking and no Forward

If a boats at the dock are you going to go swimming or insist the owner pulls it to re-align shift splines?

first off i guess i was wrong about the splines being off, if that were the case, the drive would not even shift into either FWD or REV depending on which way they were off - and again, you will NEVER, ever, ever get the drive to shift properly by adjusting the cable if the splines are off, it just cannot be done

Why don't we give him a do-able solution based upon reasonable assumptions and minimal costs?

the advice i give people here is how to PROPERLY repair their boats based upon the information they provide and my experience as a boat repair tech, i'm not here to save them money - thats their perogative

yeah i may not always be right but i will own up to it if i am wrong, and i would never suggest an unsafe or blatently improper method of repair

Hi All....Well I removed the outdrive and noticed that the steering belows was torn. I also need to replace my shift cable. Now I am in the process of looking for a Hinge Pin Tool so I can remove the bell housing to see if any other belows needs to be replaced. Once I determine that then I will order the parts I need.

Hi, and welcome aboard. Just to clarify, the bellows are listed as shift, exhaust, and u-joint. Both the ujoint and shift should be replaced, the exhaust is up to you as it is below the water line and full of water every time the engine is turned off. It is to muffle the engine exhaust under water so it is quiet.

If the u-joint bellows was torn, how's the gimbal bearing and ujoints? Stick your fingers inside the gimbal and rotate it. Does is feel silky smooth or rough when it turns?

Here is a ebay search for the hinge pin tool, however many on here use a 1/2" allen wrench to do it.

You may want to look at your shift shaft seal and bushings in the bellhousing since it is being removed. The seal has been resdesigned and if yours is original it is probably cracked. They are pretty easy to replace. I had difficulty with the small screw in the top arm on the shift shaft, used heat on the set screw to get it out, and replaced the arm and screw with new,

Here is a photo from Fishermark of his installed. They are the large brass bushings in the photo and the upper one has the seal pressed into it.

Good Luck with it

I got the Hinge Pin tool and was able to remove the pins after a applying little heat to the screws. Now the bellhousing is ready to be removed. I checked the gimbal bearing and it is moving freely. I also checked the u-joint bellows and it appears to be intact. I will know more once I remove the bellhousing completely. I just need to get the special extension tool to remove the clamps. I bought a shift cable kit to replace the shift belows and the shift cable. It came with other parts and seals so I will replace them as well.

Sorry I ment the Shift Bellows....I found my leaking problem. The Shift Bellows was torn and the u-joint Bellow. See picture. You see my finger poking through on the left side.

Here is what the back looks like now.

So tommorow I am off to get the ujoint bellows and the shift bellows. Besides sanding the edge where the bellows re-attach is there anything else I should apply before re-attaching the bellows?

Get a tube of bellows adhesive. You will see an everlasting war about whether or not it is necessary. My opinion is to use it.

-RE: -. Some people freak out at a rotted transom, convinced operating the boat or attempting to repair it is akin to suicide and a threat to society.

That's funny right there, and also true!!! I've put many hours on rotten transoms . I'm still alive!!!!!!

T noticed that one of the 2 Pipe Plug was missing.

Been there done that LOL. FYI the aft plug is seawater, the forward plug is antifreeze. When you winterize, just pull the aft plug. Congratulations of the good work so far.
