Aloha All,

I got a little problem, My motor had some bad gas in her so I flush that all out and change in lin fuel filter so that is all good now. And I cleaned the carburator real good and put it back on the motor but she won't idle. I get it started by useing the choke but if I push the choke in it dies or if I let off the throttle she dies. I believe this is a 97 model two stroke. I really need some advice, I have a fishing tourney this saturday and I am stumped.

Mahalo.

Welcome Kauai - -

How did you clean the carb? Did you disassemble, blow out all passages with carb cleaner and put in a new carb kit? If not I suggest that you start there.

I removed the carb and used a carb cleaner and blew out all the passages. I did not install a rebuild kit. If I can't figure this out tonight I am going to bring it to the shop. Ugh $60 bucks. I also had my friend who is a auto mechanic help me out. We were both stumped. My friend said he is going to check a book he has to see if we are missing something. The thing is it ran great about six months ago. I feel terriable for letting this motor not run for that long. It has always been real reliable. Use to start up first pull every time.

Kauai....did you pull the low speed needle and blow carb cleaner through the port? To reset the needle, screw in till it lightly seats and back out 1 1/4 turn. Most likely you will have to run it in a little to get it to idle but this setting is a good place to start.

Re: 15HP Johnson won't idle

Hey thanks people. Great advice. My nieghbor just told me that he has the same year and make motor and it has been sitting for awhile. It is missing the back cover for the leg but he is going to give me the motor. Can't beat that. But I am going to see if I can get one of these running by tomorrow night. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the great advice. Keep them coming if you have any more. OH MARINEMECH, witch jet are you talking about? The one by the float? I did remove that and cleaned it up real good, but I am going to check it again. Also I might need to get new gaskets if it is recommended, they look good to me no tears or anything but if I removed them and put them back on would that cause a air leak? Sorry I am raddling on but I just want to cover everything. Thanks again.

Well I got the motor back from the shop and it is all good. Puurrs like a kitten. Aparentlly I missed a small valve when I cleaned it. It was all gunked up. So The carb has a new carb kit on it and now it is ready to go. Lucky for me. I get to go fishing tomorrow. :)
