i removed my 1991 xr6 150 hp motor to repair a crack across the back, due to the previous owner not using the motor stand. after putting it back on i was suprised when the motor started right up and seemed to run just fine. first time on the lake after the repairs it runs fine at idle. when not in gear i can hold at 3000 rpm's and temp is 180-200 deg f. when in gear and only 2000 rpm's temp alarm will sound at 243 deg f. stats seem to be good, poppet is operational (i think). tailtale has stream but i think it may be weak. gonna replace the water pump anyway. the think that worries me most is the amount of bubbles that seem to come from the prop area. starts and runs at idle like a champ. bad piston rings? cracked head?

Re: 150 xr6 overheating (hope im wrong)!!!

240 is way too hot, 160 to 170 should be all as the poppet should be opened to allow maximum cooling.

The water pump kit is a good idea, but you should also check to see that the seat of the poppet is firmly in place and not coming loose, moving out with the plunger and still restricting water flow.

If that doesn't cure your cooling then remove the cyl heads to replace the gaskets. take a close look at the block and heads to be sure that they are straight.

Also check ignition timing, too retarded OR advanced will cause heating.

replaced the water pump blade. with the hose connected it still runs at 160-170. water coming out of the stream has steam coming off of it. did a compression test and all cylinders are between 100 psi and 115 psi. the stream coming out seems to be hit and miss. not a constant steady stream. stats are opening. think i will replace the poppet next. what do you think?

Re: 150 xr6 overheating (hope im wrong)!!!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! dropped the lower end again and replaced the water pump housing. although the stats seemed to open fine when put into hot water, i replaced them too. thought while i was at it i would replace the plugs. removed the poppet and had it looked at by the mechanic at the local marina. he said if it was his boat he wouldnt replace it. looks just fine. nice to know he wasnt selling me a bounch of **** i dont need. anyway, hooked it back up to the hose and let it run for 10 minutes. temp never got above 100 deg f. hope this may help somebody else.
