150 XP fuel pump question

I just recently purchased a 1986 Evinrude 150XP, the VRO is totally gone and it's been running on a 12V Mr. Gasket fuel pump. I discovered it is dumping too much fuel into the carbs and was wondering what alternatives I had to the Mr. Gasket pump? Is there a NON VRO pump for this engine? Is there a better choice for a fuel pump? Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated, and I do know they make a NON VRO pump that is called a "conversion" pump for this motor but it's almost as much as regular VRO pump and I really wasn't looking to spend another $300 on this engine. Thanks

My 1987 150 Johnny was converted to two regular fuel pumps hooked together; I under stand they are for a 140 engine of the same year but you will need for the gurus to tell you how to set these up I know they both run off of pulse pert hoses from the block. The pumps work very well with no problems. Good luck

You can convert to the old-style dual fuel pumps fairly easily. Check out the parts list for a 1983 V6 crossflow. You will find the pumps supercede to two different part numbers. One is the fuel pump only, ( 438559) the other pump is the same fuel pump, but with a special J-hose inside the box (393870). Both pumps run off crankcase pulses. You crankcase only has one (for the old VRO). If you look on the block intake you will see the other nearby hole had a plug put in it from the factory. Remove that plug and put another hose barb in it, just like the other one. Now you are set for the old dual pump setup. It will more than feed enough fuel to run that 165 hp XP engine.

Thanks for the reply, that really helps since I'm a novice to outboard motor repair. Is there a certain way these need to be hooked up or is it self explanatory? I also noticed the fuel rail, the thing that feeds fuel to the carbs, is leaking at what appears to be a joint down by the lower carb, is that repairable or something I need to replace? Sorry for all the questions, just wanna make sure I'm not messing something up I could have avoided.

Also, this morning I went to tilt the motor down and all I got was the relay clicking. So, I swapped relays and it worked going down but then wouldn't go up. On my way home I stopped and picked up a new relay, put it in, and same thing, it only works on the side I have the original relay on, any suggestions?

Put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on your existing pump can get them fairly cheap

Without a picture of the side of a 1983 complete engine, it's hard to know how all the parts fit. A good substitute diagram might help, from the factory online parts catalog. Check this out: epc.brp.com When you get into the parts lists, look up a 1983 V6 engine-then go to the fuel pump diagram. They are all the same Johnson or Evinrude. That should help. One word of caution. Some of the hoses depicted there are sold as "bulk" hose. You can get that anywhere. Other hoses have real part numbers. These hoses are special and you need to buy them from Bombardier. Those hoses are heated at the factory and bend into tight radiuses. Bulk hose, in those locations- will kink when bent into the same tight radius and that kink will restrict fuel flow. Maybe cause the engine to run lean. So, purchase the hoses with factory part numbers for sure instead of using bulk hose.
