Re: 150 or 200 4 stroke

Sorry. I tried to edit my first post. Only 1/2 of the paragraph got posted. Guess you can't edit your first post.
I've been coming to this site for info. for a while.
I have searched but can't find info. on which is the better motor to buy, the 150 4 stroke or 200 stroke for a 23ft Hurricane Deck boat.
My neighbor is buying a boat this weekend and asked me which motor to buy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:D

Re: 150 or 200 4 stroke

I am not a huge 4 stroke fan..but if the boat can handle the 200 I would go that route. I am geared toward having extra HP, I hate hitting WOT and wanting to go a little faster. but them 4 strokes are heavy. I have a 19' bay boat with a 115 4 stroke, i get water running in my boat through the self bailing holes when more than 1 person gets in the back of the boat...wish I could sell it and get a etec, I would even prefer a older carrbed 2 stroke motor.

It all depends on what you're gonna be doing with the boat. If you're just cruising around, fishing, enjoying the water, then the 150HP will be more than adequate. If you're on a big lake or river, like/need more speed, gonna be pulling multiple skiers/tubers, then the 200HP will work better. My 18' boat has a 90HP on it and I rarely use wide open throttle...probably would be just as happy with a 70HP. Like I said, it all depends on your boating style and needs. Good Luck!:)

Re: 150 or 200 4 stroke

I was wondering if there were any reported problems with either the 150 or 200 4 stroke.
I have an 07 250 4 stroke on the back of a 23ft NauticStar deck boat with about 45 hours on it and no problems.

Re: 150 or 200 4 stroke

I have a neighbor with a NauticStar deck boat with a 150 hp 4 stroke Yamaha. And, it runs great--probably too fast for most riders comfort.

The 150 and 200 Yamaha's are great motors. The standard 200 hp motor is 593 pounds--117 pounds more than the 150 hp motor. Weight can be a factor in any boat. If the boat's going to be run very fast, go for the 200 hp. The 150 hp is satisfactory for most people's needs, however.

My favorite motor in the Yamaha lineup is the VMax/SHO engines @ 200,225,250 hp--all @ 505 pounds. The only limitation is that the boat has got to be able to handle a 20" motor. They're available @ IBoats at great prices--maybe not more than the local dealer's quoting.
These motors are absolutely top of the line in every way--performance and efficiency. It would be my pick if the price was close.

Re: 150 or 200 4 stroke

I have a Yamaha f150 on my 21 foot Hurricane, and I'd say it's a perfect match. I can hit 40 mph, and on this boat (Sundeck 217), that is about as fast as you would want to go. Hurricane deck boats are a little bumpy due to the hull design in rough water, so that will limit speed. If your friend is getting a 23 foot boat, I'd definitely recommend the f200.

The f150 is very reliable, and I know of no problems. Maintanance is fairly easy, and I do all my own. Gas mileage is also good. The f200 is 6 cylinders versus 4 on the f150, so you will pay more at the pump.

Ok, so he's buying the 24ft Hurricane with the Yamaha 250. Thanks for everyone's help.
