I put in a new impeller on my 87 xp150. Now I can't get my linkage set right. I measured the shift rod before I reinstalled the lower unit and it was in spec. I have adjusted the cables til I am blue in the face and am not even close.I took out the pivot bolt that attatches to the shift rod by mistake. I have it all hooked back up, but it seems like the throw is awfully long. I think that is where my problem is. Any suggestions? It can be shifted manually with the cables unhooked. I can also start it and the lever on top of the remote works fine

Re: 150 linkage problem

Did you adjust the rod height when you had the leg off?

Seek out the parts breakdown for your linkage and see where you went wrong on reassembly.

The rod adjustment was minor. I will check the breakdown. Thanks.

I just did this, and I could not get it to work. Turns out my shift cable was in the process of braking and was not working correctly.

Re: 150 linkage problem

Once you confirm that the shift rod is set to the proper factory height, you should be in business. Once that is set, you should be able to shift the engine normally by hand through the F-N-R. This confirms that your height measurement is correct. Once it shifts properly between gears-then connect the shift cables at the engine end. Put the control box in neutral, the engine in neutral and see how the end of the shift cable eye aligns to the stud on the shift lever. You may need to adjust the shift cable by turning the large plastic trunion nut on the end of the cable.
